Cover for Science et Vie Junior

The sculpted words “ILLUSION” are a variation of my Illusion Typeface found elsewhere on this site.

This was produced for a special Paradox edition of Science et Vie Junior, a French science magazine for younger readers. The main structure is “painted” in the computer. The sky, man, and accessories are photographed.

When I produced my design I had not appreciated how much typography was going to be crowded onto the cover. The editors asked me to remove the word “ILLUSION” as they felt it conflicted with the other information. This left me without a support for the bucket beam. I had to invent a quick solution that didn’t involve re-drawing the whole image.

This image is based upon the “Penrose Triangle”. Although attributed to Sir Roger Penrose, who produced it in the 1950‘s, it had in fact been produced earlier in 1934 by one of the pioneers of illusion, the Swedish artist Oscar Reutersvärd .
