The Garden of Professor Möbius
The Garden of Professor Möbius
This reflects another of my interests, recreational mathematics. This is the garden of the 19th century mathematican August Möbius. It is a folded single sided surface, a form of Môbius strip. When you turn a corner in this garden the folded turn moves you from the front surface of the pathway to the rear surface or vice versa.
Every day the professor waters his flowers. Being of a rather more intellectual than athletic bent he wants to find the shortest route which will take him past all five flower beds, starting and ending at the obelisk in the centre. He does not wish to turn around and re-trace his steps nor to travel the same pathway more than once on the same side. The flower beds are planted on the visible side only. Although he can walk between them on the rear side he cannot water them from there.
